Packaging
Retail and Bulk Formats
Retail pouches and bulk PP/jute bags are available depending on product — the same packaging options published on each product page. For Tanzania specifically:
- • Swahili and English are both widely used in trade; confirm current labelling-language expectations with your importer for your specific product category.
- • Product name, ingredient list, net weight, country of origin and a production or expiry date are standard declarations expected on a retail pack.
- • Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar can have different arrangements for the same product category — confirm which applies to your actual port of entry.
Typical Shipment Formats
Incoterms and Order Sizes
Quotes to Tanzanian buyers are typically on FOB Indian port, CFR Dar es Salaam or CIF Dar es Salaam terms — CFR or FOB if you already hold your own freight and cargo cover, CIF if you'd rather it's arranged as part of the price.
- • Dar es Salaam is the usual point of entry for a bulk container from India; transit time and service frequency are confirmed at booking.
- • Pre-shipment samples of 200g or 500g are standard for product approval before a commercial order is confirmed.
- • Container-load and part-container quantities are both quotable, subject to product and packaging.
Documentation
What Your Clearing Agent Will Need
- Commercial invoice and packing list, matched to the goods actually loaded.
- Certificate of origin, issued by an Indian chamber of commerce.
- Phytosanitary certificate from India's plant quarantine authority, generally required for agricultural and plant-origin products entering Tanzania.
- A certificate of conformity or destination inspection result, where the product category requires one under Tanzania's current import-verification process — confirmed with your importer, since this is an area that has changed in the past and is worth checking fresh rather than assuming from an older reference.
- Bill of lading, and on CIF terms, the marine insurance certificate.

Destination-Specific Considerations
Before You Place a First Order
Standards and Import Verification (TBS)
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) is the relevant standards body for imported goods, and Tanzania's import-verification requirements for specific product categories have been revised more than once in recent years. Confirm the current process for your specific product and HS code with your importer or clearing agent before finalising an order, rather than relying on an older reference.
Phytosanitary and Plant Health
Agricultural and plant-origin imports are generally subject to phytosanitary certification and plant-health oversight, consistent with most international agricultural trade. Product-specific import permits can also apply; confirm current requirements with your customs broker for your specific product.
Zanzibar and a Long Spice-Trade History
Zanzibar, part of Tanzania, has a centuries-old history as a spice-trading hub — a genuine existing market familiarity with spice sourcing and grading that's worth knowing about, though it doesn't substitute for confirming current import requirements on the mainland side, which differ from Zanzibar's own arrangements in some respects.
East African Community (EAC) Common External Tariff
Tanzania is an EAC member state and applies the bloc's common external tariff on imports from outside it, plus VAT — both confirmed with your customs broker at the time of import.
Dar es Salaam as the Main Port of Entry
Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's principal container port and the usual point of entry for a bulk shipment. If your buyer relationship involves onward distribution — into landlocked neighbours the port also serves — tell us the real end market at enquiry stage.
