Packaging
Retail and Bulk Formats
Retail pouches and bulk PP/jute bags are available depending on product — the same packaging options published on each product page. For Kenya specifically:
- • English is Kenya's primary language of trade and labelling, alongside Swahili — confirm current labelling-language expectations with your importer for your specific product category.
- • Product name, ingredient list, net weight, country of origin and a production or expiry date are standard declarations expected on a retail pack.
- • Bulk bags for coco peat and coir pith follow the packaging formats already published on that product's page, distinct from any food-labelling requirement.
Typical Shipment Formats
Incoterms and Order Sizes
Quotes to Kenyan buyers are typically on FOB Indian port, CFR Mombasa or CIF Mombasa terms — CFR or FOB if you already hold your own freight and cargo cover, CIF if you'd rather it's arranged as part of the price.
- • Mombasa is the usual point of entry for a bulk container from India; transit time and service frequency are confirmed at booking.
- • Pre-shipment samples of 200g or 500g are standard for product approval before a commercial order is confirmed.
- • Container-load and part-container quantities are both quotable, subject to product and packaging.
Documentation
What Your Clearing Agent Will Need
- Commercial invoice and packing list, matched to the goods actually loaded.
- Certificate of origin, issued by an Indian chamber of commerce.
- Phytosanitary certificate from India's plant quarantine authority, generally required for agricultural and plant-origin products entering Kenya.
- A Certificate of Conformity, where the product category falls under Kenya's Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme — arranged through a KEBS-appointed inspection agency and confirmed per shipment.
- Bill of lading, and on CIF terms, the marine insurance certificate.

Destination-Specific Considerations
Before You Place a First Order
Standards and Conformity (KEBS)
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) sets product standards and, for many imported goods, requires verification under the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme before customs will clear the consignment. Whether a specific product and HS code falls under this requirement is confirmed with your importer or clearing agent per shipment — this isn't a blanket requirement for every category, but it's common enough to check before assuming it doesn't apply.
Phytosanitary Requirements (KEPHIS)
The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) oversees plant and agricultural import requirements, including import permits for certain plant-origin categories in addition to the standard phytosanitary certificate. This is confirmed per product, since requirements can differ between a processed spice and a raw agricultural commodity like coco peat.
Coco Peat for Kenya's Flower-Farm Sector
Kenya is one of the world's largest cut-flower exporters, and coco peat/coir pith is a widely used growing medium in that industry — a genuine, established demand case distinct from the food-import requirements above. If you're buying for horticulture rather than food-service or retail, say so at enquiry stage, since the compliance path is different.
East African Community (EAC) Common External Tariff
Kenya applies the EAC's common external tariff on imports from outside the bloc, plus VAT — both confirmed with your customs broker at the time of import, since rates and category-specific exemptions can differ by product.
Mombasa as the Main Port of Entry
Mombasa is Kenya's principal container port and the usual point of entry for a bulk shipment, also serving as a gateway for landlocked neighbours in the region. If your buyer relationship involves onward distribution beyond Kenya, tell us the real end market at enquiry stage.
