Indian Turmeric Export Guide

Everything an importer should settle before buying Indian turmeric: Erode and Salem grades, curcumin tiers, finger versus powder, HS codes, MOQ and destination requirements.

What We Supply

Turmeric sourced from Erode, one of India's established turmeric-producing belts, supplied as whole fingers and ground powder for international food distributors, manufacturers and wholesale buyers. Grade, colour value and moisture parameters are confirmed with the supplying source at the enquiry stage.

Decide These First

  • Form: whole fingers, bulbs or ground powder. They are priced and coded differently, and powder is more sensitive to storage.
  • Origin belt and grade: Erode and Salem finger and bulb are the grades we supply, and the right one depends on your colour and price target.
  • Curcumin tier: state the minimum you need, since typical figures differ by origin and are confirmed per lot.
  • Destination: lead and contaminant limits and labelling differ by market, so name the country in your first enquiry.

ShankuChakra is a merchant exporter: we coordinate sourcing, specification and export documents with qualified suppliers, and we do not yet have an existing customer base to cite.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the HS code for turmeric exported from India?
Whole/dried turmeric fingers are classified under HS code 0910.30.20, and ground turmeric powder under 0910.30.30 — these are two different codes, not one code covering both forms. Confirm the code against your specific form with your own customs broker as well, since interpretation can vary slightly by destination country.
Whole turmeric fingers or ground powder — which should I import?
Whole fingers hold curcumin content and colour longer in storage and transit, and are the better choice if you grind domestically or want a longer shelf life. Ground powder is ready for direct use but more sensitive to moisture and light — ask for the milling date if you import it.
What curcumin content should I expect from Erode turmeric?
A typical range for Erode-origin turmeric is 2.5%–4.0% curcumin, with moisture at or below 10% and volatile oil at or above 2.0%. Higher-curcumin tiers (closer to 5%) are associated with other origins, such as Alleppey in Kerala, rather than Erode specifically. These are typical ranges for the crop and origin — the actual figures for your specific lot are confirmed with the supplying source before shipment.
What is a typical minimum order quantity for turmeric?
Around 100 kg is a common indicative starting point for a first order, packed in retail pouches or 25 kg bulk PP bags, with the exact minimum confirmed against your packaging and destination at enquiry stage.

Requirements vary by product and destination and change over time. This page is orientation, not legal or customs advice, so confirm with your customs broker.
